Weir House Sonning

Wild swimming

Swimming in the Thames

Weir House sits right on the Thames at Sonning, with lawns running down to the water and private access for swimming straight from the garden.

Early-morning swims by the weir pool, lazy afternoon dips in summer, and a cold plunge before the sauna in winter — the river is the heart of a stay here.

Full swimming guidance — entry points, seasonal conditions and safety notes — lives in the house manual provided before arrival.

Swimming safety

Swimming in the Thames is open-water, wild swimming and is undertaken entirely at your own risk. Choosing to enter the river is a personal decision for each individual, and each guest is responsible for their own safety and that of their party. Please read and follow this guidance.

  • The Thames is natural open water and conditions change constantly. Currents, depth, submerged obstacles, boat traffic and the lock and weir can all be hazardous — always keep well clear of the weir and the lock.
  • Check water quality before you swim. River quality varies and can deteriorate sharply after heavy rainfall or sewage discharges; consult up-to-date sources such as the Environment Agency and the Rivers Trust, and avoid swimming after storms or if the water looks discoloured or has a strong smell.
  • The water can be very cold, even in summer. Cold water carries a real risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia — enter slowly to acclimatise, and only swim if you are confident, experienced with cold-water swimming and in good health.
  • Never swim alone, after dark, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Let someone know before you get in, and don't swim beyond your ability.
  • Children and weaker swimmers must be supervised at all times near the water, and we recommend a wetsuit and tow float for added visibility and buoyancy.
  • If you have any medical condition (including heart conditions), are pregnant, or are unsure, seek medical advice before swimming.
  • Weir House provides general guidance in the house manual, but this does not guarantee safe conditions at any given time — you must assess the river yourself each time and make your own decision about whether to swim.

Common questions

Is it safe to swim in the Thames at Sonning?

Guests swim from the property's own frontage in the slower water near the weir pool. Like all river swimming it requires common sense — guidance on entry points, currents and seasonal conditions is in the house manual.

Do I need a wetsuit?

In summer most guests swim without one. Outside June–September a wetsuit makes longer swims comfortable — and the sauna is waiting either way.
